Dear all

The last couple of weeks have been significant for a number of our students.  Our Year 9s are involved in option events in lessons and after school so that they can make informed decisions regarding their future learning and potential career pathways.

Thank you to all the families of Year 11 students who attended our subject evening meetings online. Having time to talk through your children's progress and how we can work in partnership to ensure they can be as successful as possible in the summer exams is crucial.  I would like to remind you all that there are support resources on our website for students and their responsible adults, it really is worthwhile using these.

KS4 options: https://www.jogschool.org/curriculum/ks4-options

Exam support: https://www.johnofgauntschool.org/parents-and-carers/supporting-exam-success

Extracurricular programme (including the link to our on-line booklet that includes after-school revision sessions): https://www.jogschool.org/students/extra-curricular-activities

Sixth form information: https://www.jogschool.org/sixth-form

I am sure you will find the above of real benefit.

I would also like to inform you that in this academic year we have had an incredible 511 students achieve over 100 rewards points resulting in a Bronze Achievement Certificate.  These students come from every year group from year 7 through to year 11. In addition, 10 students have achieved over 200 rewards points this year, again from KS3 and 4, resulting in them being awarded a Silver Achievement Certificate. We have another group who are just points away from both awards as well.

Have a lovely, and hopefully dry, weekend.

Mr Rhodes
Headteacher

New Parental Communication Policy

To support clear, respectful, and effective communication between school and home, we are introducing a new Parental Communication Policy. This outlines how we will engage with parents and carers, including response times, appropriate channels, and expectations for respectful dialogue.

The full policy is now available on our school website, and we encourage all parents to review it. Thank you for your cooperation and support.

New Age Kurling Tournament

On Tuesday 21st January, 13 of our Year 12 Sports Leaders ran the annual Schools' Games New Age Kurling competition in our Sports Hall. The Year 12s did a phenomenal job, supporting both the SEND students competing, and the leaders from Fairfield College.

Our leaders demonstrated Kindness, Belonging and Excellence throughout the day, and were complimented by the other staff attending the trip for their patience, compassion and professionalism in running the event.

Well done to all involved, and thank you for representing the school so well!

Mr Merriman

From Monday 3rd February to Sunday 9th it is Children’s mental health week. The theme that has been chosen this year is ‘know yourself, grow yourself'.  During this week, in assembly, tutor times and PSHE lessons, we will be focusing on the concepts of self-awareness and emotional self-regulation. We will be asking students to reflect on how they see themselves now and, in the future, and all the strengths they have. We will also be considering the idea of ‘taking 10 seconds’ and the potential benefits of consciously allowing ourselves time to think about things before reacting.

Our latest extracurricular activities magazine for the spring term has been published and can be found on our school website via the following links.

The magazine is full of information about what clubs are on offer, including a news round up from each club.

Another way in which you can keep up to date with the latest news and events at John of Gaunt is to follow some of our social media channels.

On Thursday 16th January 25 GCSE and A Level historians went to the Theatre Royal in Bath to watch “A Man for all Seasons”.

The greatest, most powerful and dangerous figures who shaped English history were brought vividly to life in Robert Bolt’s award-winning play.

Martin Shaw starred as Sir Thomas More – scholar, ambassador, Lord Chancellor and friend to King Henry VIII. Above all, he is a man of integrity, loved by the common people and his own family.

When Henry demands a divorce from Catherine of Aragon, clearing the way for him to marry Anne Boleyn, the staunchly Catholic Thomas is forced to choose between his loyalty and his own conscience, committing an incredible act of defiance for which he eventually pays the ultimate price...

The show brought this period of history alive for the students, who were, as ever, a credit to themselves and the school.

What better way to do your revision?

Ms Davison

Ten Tors 2025 latest!

Over the past few weeks of cold, wet and windy conditions, our hardy Ten Tors trainees have been braving the elements to continue in their preparations for the annual Ten Tors Event in May.

Over the weekend of the 11th and 12th January, around 30 students attempted the brutal Imber Range Perimeter Path - a 2-day, 30-mile circuit of the west part of Salisbury Plain (Upton Scudamore, Westbury, Gore Cross, Tilshead, Chitterne, Warminster). Snow and frost littered the ground and keeping their footing was a major challenge for the students. However, the clear signposts and lack of rain meant that students only fell victim to blisters, a fractured foot, and the sheer physical strain of carrying an 18kg rucksack for hours upon end. As usual, we camped in a sheltered paddock at Chitterne, and those strong and fit enough to continue eating a hearty breakfast and then finished the walk back to Upton Scudamore. A huge well done to the 19 students who completed the hike with their full packs and also those who battled on with injuries for many miles.

Last weekend we had our first weekend on Dartmoor - due to the weather forecast for Sunday the decision was made to shorten this to only camping, Friday night and hiking on Saturday. As she can be, Dartmoor was stunning, a radiant glow of yellow grass, blue skies and glistening ice and, despite very challenging windy and cold conditions on Friday evening which caused numerous issues with tents being put up, the students managed to finish routes of around 15 miles and some navigation training was also undertaken. Due to half-term and my upcoming school trip to Berlin, the students now have a nice few weeks of rest!

As always, huge thanks to everyone who helps make this possible - Mrs Brooks, Mountain Leader Iain Richards, Lady Sarah Gooch, volunteer Imogen Wood and also Elliot Ward for his invaluable assistance.

CULTURE VULTURES

I am delighted to announce a new club at JOG!

“Culture Vultures” is a theatre club open to staff and students in years 11-13. The club is purely for enjoyment and to take advantage of the amazing performances at our local world-class theatre.

Members of the club will have the opportunity to watch a variety of plays and shows at the Theatre Royal in Bath at significantly reduced prices - usually approximately £12-15 per show.

Students will need to make their own way to the theatre (either by public transport or with parents - maybe groups of friends could lift-share?).  We will meet students at the theatre, and they will be released from there at the end of the show.

I will soon be writing home with details of the upcoming shows and asking for expressions of interest.

Looking forward to seeing you at the next show!

Ms R Davison

Year 12 had a wet and windy trip to Bristol Harbourside to collect data for the Changing Places unit of the A-level Geography. They particularly enjoyed the café culture of the area and enjoyed a walk around the Arnolfini art gallery.

Term 3 Extra Curricular

This term we are not only providing after-school clubs, but with the support of Active Trowbridge we will now be putting on lunch time clubs for your enjoyment too. To attend you will meet at Dunston gate by 13:15 for all KS3 pupils and by 13:35 for all KS4 pupils - you will be collected by a member of Active Trowbridge before the fun begins. If you are late, you will not be allowed to attend.
