Dear Parents and Carers

It has been a pleasure to welcome all our students at the start of a new year.  Our new Year 7 students have been an absolute delight, joining us full of confidence and enthusiastic energy.  I can't wait to get to know them better and see what they can do in the classroom, on the sports field, on the stage and through many of our extra-curricular activities.

I have really enjoyed talking to many of our established young people about their time over the summer and what they have done.  It has been fantastic to hear from students, such as Tolly Eddleston who has been volunteering in India, teaching in classes of 60 students, Amelie Eaton, in Year 8, who has become the national BMX champion for her age group for the 5th successive year and our shooting star in Year 11, Cameron Nash, who is taking a lead role in the Trowbridge Players production of the Railway Children (please see below).  We have such a diverse range of talent at this school.  I am regularly impressed and proud of our students with what they do outside of JoG as well as flourishing in school with us.

I am pleased to write that we have had another great year of results at Key stage 5 and 4 this year.  Our overall grades and progress have improved on last year, especially to note the top-end grades at both A level and GCSEs, leading to a trend of year-on-year improvement since the Covid affected examinations.  100% of students who wanted to go to university, have done so and we have had more Year 11s stay with us in sixth form than previous years as well.  We also have the highest number of students join us from other establishments, that demonstrates the recognition of our top-quality 6th form provision.  I am excited to see how our Year 11s and 13s progress this year as they are showing real potential moving into their final year.  I would like to publicly thank all my staff for all their diligence and dedication to all our students, they really do provide such a wonderful experience for all our young people from Years 7 to 13.

I look forward to our first full week next week.  Can I remind students and families that with our changeable weather students should bring waterproof coats with them to school.  Can I also ask families to arrange drop-off / pick-up points outside of the school grounds if they can, as our parking space is limited and it can become very congested at the start and end of the day.

Will parents and carers please also discuss with their child the importance of road safety if they are cycling to and from school and when they are walking, as some of the pathways can be narrow, particularly when students are waiting to cross the road at pedestrian crossings.

Please enjoy the rest of the newsletter, please also keep up to date with all our announcements and celebrations through our website and social media pages:

Welcome Year 7!

What a fantastic start to the term we have had. It was great to see you all on Wednesday for our welcome assembly. You all look so smart in your new uniform and it was great to see so many smiley faces!

Students have spent a lot of time getting to know their tutor group and have started to meet their teachers for the first time. I have had lovely feedback from staff already to say our year group are kind, polite and hard working.

My ClassCharts has been inundated with lots of positive points and students who have already achieved 4 x 24 hours reward points. It's great to see you being rewarded for your hard work and demonstrating our core values.

PGL is on the horizon and students are starting to get excited. I will be leading an information evening on Monday 16th September 5pm - 6pm in Wingfield Hall where more information will be given. The deadline for the deposit is Friday 13th.

If you have any concerns, please contact your tutor in the first instance using the booklet given to you previously or the school website.

Miss Lewis

Message about attendance

We are so glad to welcome students back and to see so many learners who are positive for the new school year. We have had an excellent teacher training session on LEAP (Listen, Empathise, Agree, Partner) conversations to support the improved attendance and punctuality focus for this year. You will be glad to know that the tutor teams for respective years will be conducting meetings with parents and students who initial concerns regarding attendance and punctuality issues, giving a personalised and first hand response to students who are within their tutor group. These will be face to face meetings which aim to understand the barriers to attendance and put in place support where necessary. Within this training useful links and support initiatives were shared so that we are able to offer professional support for specific areas of concern.

We will continue to hold our punctuality focus and the late detentions will remain in action for Wednesdays and Fridays. These will be time appropriate. In addition to this, those students who have need for additional support to improve positive behaviours of belonging, a programme will begin to support the more complex needs of our students and will be complimented by our school attendance meetings.

As I am sure you will be aware the government have released a new set of guidance to support the improved attendance levels for this year and we, at The John of Gaunt School are so happy that we are able to support our community in this clear vision to improve our young peoples outcomes.

For further reading on the new attendance guidance please see: https://www.johnofgauntschool.org/attachments/download.asp?file=1994&type=pdf The letter for Wiltshire council advising parents, that we sent out last term.

The summary of information is also on our website:

All of our students should aim to achieve 100% attendance each year to get the very best out of their school career.

Students should attend school each day on time.

The school day starts at 08:30am and tutor time begins at 08:35am.

The school day ends at 3:00pm.

Excellent attendance is considered between 100% and 98% where students have had less than four days off across the year for unavoidable circumstances such as medical reasons.

Good attendance sits between 95% and 97.9%

This is where there have been instances of absence which are irregular.

Initial concerns for absence are when a student has 5% absence to 9% absence and this can equate to up to 50 lessons missed of learning.

At 10% absence, a child is considered persistently absent, and it is likely, if no medical evidence supports the absence, that the local authority will be contacted. This level of absence is severely detrimental to learner’s outcomes. Those who are persistently absent miss 19 days of learning across the school year.

We have also updated our website to include helpful advise and links to services if any children are concerned about school. In addition to this our dedicated pastoral team are on hand in school to ensure that students are able to discuss issues arise.

https://www.johnofgauntschool.org/parents-and-carers/attendance

We, in the attendance team, are sure that this years attendance and punctuality will continue to improve so as to support the holistic and academic outcomes of all of our young people.
