Paul Skipp, Headteacher

Dear all,

Well what a week! As you will know, this week our Year 10 students have been working from home. As a school we have been delivering live lessons using Microsoft Teams. We have been really impressed with the engagement of our Year 10 students and I am delighted to share that our attendance of this year group this week has been 96.8%. We now look forward to all our Year 10 students re-joining us back in school on Monday 12th October.

Also this week we had our first virtual Parents' Evening. In many ways this was a tale of two halves! The feedback received from parents has been really positive, with an easy to use system. For many parents we recognise it is much easier to stay at home and log into a virtual event rather than travel to school and in some cases have to arrange child care. Unfortunately,  there was a 40 minute period last night where the School Cloud system went down, which in turn meant staff and parents were unable to log in. Naturally I did share my frustration with the company and they have today assured me they have rectified the problem. We will therefore try again with the system for our subsequent parents' evenings and hope for no more issues!

Amongst a busy week, it has been so nice to continue to see our students thriving in lessons. I think one of my highlights this week was certainly listening to some of the Year 8 students play their music pieces during a performance in their music lessons.

As always, I wish you a relaxing weekend.

Attendance Matters

Every student matters, every moment counts

‘For students to be successful in school, they have to actually be in school’ (Sprick & Sprick 2019)

Our new ClassCharts button has now been installed because since our last attendance update, we have met our first whole school attendance target!

Well done to everyone for making regular school attendance a priority. To celebrate, we are awarding the whole school community with 10 ClassCharts points.

As you know, our aim is that every student in our community attends regularly (7 or fewer absences across the entire academic year, discounting any Covid-19 related absence).

Our next target is for an average daily attendance of 95% to be achieved 5 times. Once this has been reached we will be able to use our new button and award another 10 points to every student in school.

Keep up the hard work all and remember to make every moment count!

The Board of Governors of the John of Gaunt School has a new Chair - as well as the old one! At the last full governing body on 7th September the Board approved the establishment of co-chairs for the school and Sarah Bergg and David Whewell were unanimously elected.

So how will it work? We are planning a clear split of responsibilities between the two of us, but certain tasks will be shared. We know that co-chairing will only work well with good communication, trust and understanding. It helps that we have known each other for more than 9 years. We intend to make sure we keep in touch and let each other know about any issues and developments, regularly speaking on the phone as well as emailing.

The school therefore benefits from both our sets of experience, skills, networks and knowledge. Two of us can cover more events, meetings and media than one. We benefit from having someone we can discuss and share issues with. And our three-way meetings with the Headteacher also benefit from having an extra and different viewpoint.

Of course, there are potential difficulties. There is scope for miscommunication or confusion about roles. Diaries can sometimes be more complicated. But we have agreed that ‘no surprises’ is a crucial rule. Making sure we both know what is being done and what has been agreed is key. There may be times when we don’t agree, but we believe that there’s nothing like a healthy disagreement to help move things on.

We will continue to review how the board is working and we will seek the views of fellow governors on the value of our co-chairing arrangement and how it compares with other boards they sit on.

Co-chairing may not be for every school and every governing body, but we passionately believe in the old saying “two heads are better than one”.
