NEWSLETTER 18

Dear all,

It has certainly been a different term, but we have continually been so proud of the attendance and engagement of our students with their remote learning. Overall our attendance to on-line lessons this term has been 96.2%, this is broadly in line with our normal attendance. Most impressive has been our Year 7 this week with an attendance of 98.8% - Well done Year 7!

There have been a number of highlights this week, however top of the list was definitely presenting Alfie Green with his Kindle for achieving 400 reward points! This week it was also a real pleasure to take a delivery of Easter Eggs from The Friends of John of Gaunt. Mrs Nevill delivered the Eggs to staff as a ‘thank you’ for all their hard work, this is really appreciated – thank you!

During the day today it has been wonderful to hear of the engagement of so many students with their personal tutor appointments, I hope this has been useful for students as we prepare for next term

Finally, I hope you are all able to stay safe and well over half term. Do find time to relax and enjoy the fresh air and most importantly, give your eyes a rest from looking at screens!

Keep safe and well everyone,

Paul Skipp

‘A big thank you’

Majesticare, a nationwide company that manage care homes in the local area want to say ‘A huge Majesticare thank you to all the incredible teachers at The John of Gaunt School who continue to teach our key-worker children throughout the pandemic’. Blenheim House Care Home contacted the school to inform us that Majesticare recently ran a competition with their staff and families, they had to nominate their favourite teacher for a thank you. Mrs Bodman was nominated by Diana Velea from  7A. Mrs Bodman was kindly presented with a lovely hamper full of tasty treats and certificate!

Well done Mrs Bodman and all of the staff at The John of Gaunt School.

Lego League Challenge

This year we are taking part in the 'Lego League Challenge' where we will design, build and program a robot to carry out a series of challenges. Every year Lego League releases a new challenge based on a real-world, scientific theme and this year's challenge is to motivate people to become more active.

We are looking to form a team of ten very enthusiastic year 10 students to carry this out. Please do not be put off if you do not know how to code, there are lots of aspects of this challenge that you can get involved with that are not coding, such as designing the robot, writing the speeches and helping out with the innovation project.

If you are interested, please send in a short letter explaining why you would like to be involved in this challenge. Letters should be sent to jnelson@jogschool.org by Monday 15th February.

Miss Nelson

Miss Lewis and the PE department are looking to celebrate your amazing achievements in sports whether that is in school or outside, as well as pointing you in the right direction for workouts over the next term. We all know that being active has so many benefits to our mental and physical health which has only been highlighted even more so with the current pandemic.

Therefore, we would like you to follow us on Instagram, @jogphysed and Twitter: @jogphysed where you will get updates from the department on how to keep busy during lockdown. Once you are allowed back into school and we are allowed to compete again, we will use these platforms to highlight individual and team successes across the School. Not only do we want to celebrate your achievements in and for the school, we would also like to celebrate you at your local Clubs and if you are getting up and active! It is also a great tool for academic purposes, we will be sending reminders of deadlines, signposting revision and trying to motivate you throughout your GCSE's.

In order to access the Instagram account, you will need to be accepted by Miss Lewis. If you have not been accepted, it may be because your username does not confirm who you are. Therefore, if you are waiting for over a week please send Miss Lewis an email with your username so that she can confirm it is you. It is important to state, we will not be following you back.

Anyone using the platform inappropriately will be removed, blocked with Heads of Year and home being contacted. If you want anything to be shared via our platforms, we will need consent from you and your parents/carers, so please get your parents/carers to email a picture and some information regarding what your achievement is to JOGPEAchievements@jogschool.org

We want to use social media to promote our department, engage with you and celebrate your achievements as there is so much that goes unnoticed. We look forward to celebrating with you all.

From Miss Lewis and Team PE"

Year 7 Spotlight!

This week the Year 7 Spotlight goes to our attendance superstars, 7C! Since September 7C have had attendance of 98.02% and 99.29% for remote learning. Well done to every student for modelling two of our core values - Resilience and Responsibility.

Mr Mirza wanted to congratulate a number of students for their most recent work on African Tribes in Geography, with some wonderful examples from Chloe and Charlie included below.

Special mention must go to Zuzanna for scoring 30/35 on her Battle of Hastings quiz – the best score from all three of Mr Gray’s classes! Meanwhile Jakub, Betty and Connor submitted some outstanding written work on the Battle, whilst Cameron and Megan have become expert verbal contributors in their remote History lessons,

Ms Taylor definitely wanted to share that 7C continue to show enthusiasm and great effort in Computer Science, the whole class have been a delight to teach remotely, have maintained a cheery approach to tasks and been responsive to participating during Teams calls, despite difficulties that have popped up along the way.

Xandy, Chloe, Betty, Megan, Zuzanna and Libby also receive praise from Ms Callaghan as they have been producing excellent Spanish work and impressing with their engagement, enthusiasm and downright professionalism in their Teams lessons.

A huge well done and congratulations to all of 7C this term, we hope you and the rest of our Year 7 community have well deserved and enjoyable half term.

Mrs Addison, Mrs Stewart, Miss Wood and Mr Kilby.
