NEWSLETTER 27

Dear all,

It’s been so nice this week for Year 7 to enjoy their trips to PGL in Liddington. Their feedback has been so positive, and it has been wonderful to see how much they have enjoyed it.

On Monday we were pleased to hear news that face coverings are no longer expected to be worn in schools. As you will know by my other communication, from Monday 17th May, we will be giving staff and students the option of wearing masks in school, however, it is no longer compulsory. Please remember that if your child uses public transport to come to school, they are still required to wear a mask. At the moment there has been no further guidance about allowing year groups to mix, so we will maintain our current system of keeping students in their bubbles.

This week our Post-16 students were able to hear from various universities about ‘university life’. We are delighted that the vast majority of students within our Post-16 are choosing to move on to university, with some being the first member of their family to do so.

Next week on Wednesday, it is the deadline for getting Activity Trip requests back into school. If you could ensure this is done it would be really appreciated.

As always, thank you for your support. I do hope you are able to enjoy your weekend.

Year 7 PGL Day Camps

This week our Year 7 students have had an outdoor education day at PGL Liddington as a reward for making a great transition to John of Gaunt in the most difficult of times. Through archery, trapeze, giant swing and raft building the students have had to use their bravery, teamwork and leadership skills to succeed- especially tutor groups 7A, 7G and 7I who had to do it all in the pouring rain!

It has been a real delight seeing the students trying new skills with enthusiasm and encouraging each other. We have been especially proud of students who have faced their fears and shown strong resilience. Students worked well with the others in their activity groups even if they didn’t know them at the start of the day and they celebrated each other’s successes. There has been a fair amount of water (“falling” in the lake), a bit of screaming but most importantly a lot of laughter.

The member of staff supporting each group has nominated students for PGL Superstar Awards in the categories of resilience, leadership, positivity and encouraging others. These will be announced next week.

Thank you to all the staff who accompanied the three trips.

Horrible History JOG Style

Over 120 Year 7 pupils participated in the annual John of Gaunt School “Living History Day” on Wednesday 5 May.

The students learned the story of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. They role-played the key events in the story of Harold Godwinson, England’s last Saxon king and Duke William of Normandy which ended with the defeat of the Saxons and William becoming the new King of England.

They handled artefacts including swords, helmets, Halberks and battle-axes and then started on some battle training.

As new recruits to the Saxon army the students learned how to create the famous Saxon shield wall and how to handle their spear. As the Normans charged the shield wall the students held firm and repelled the enemy attack.

Two days later a similar number of Year 8 pupils were recruited into the Royalist forces fighting the Parliamentarians in the Civil War.  These recruits learned pike drill and how to fire a musket and load and fire a canon at the Royalist encampment on the school field. They were put through their paces by a sergeant and learned the importance of a tight formation and how to withstand a cavalry attack.

Both events were organised in conjunction with Oxenwood Outdoor Education centre who provided the professional re-enactor and all the weaponry.

The day provided an enrichment opportunity for Year 7 and 8 students who had been studying the events of 1066 and the Civil War 1642-49 and how these shaped our island’s history. An event like this really brings History alive as the students don’t just learn about events but experience them.

It’s the next best thing to having a time machine!

Looking forward to next year,

Ms Davison

Head of History

IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE

On Friday 21st May there will be an additional Inset day. This means the school will be closed to children. This day is to allow for teachers to moderate and standardise all the Year 11 and Post 16 evidence that is being put forward for their grade submission. We wholeheartedly apologise for the inconvenience, however given the exceptional circumstances and huge task to submit accurate grades for our students we hope you understand.

Every week you will find a new reading recommendation. It will be a mix of new and old books and all recommendations are available in your school library.

Would you like to recommend your favourite book? Pop in to see Mrs Bruton!

The Girl Who Became a Tree by Joseph Coelho

Daphne is unbearably sad and adrift. She feels the painful loss of her father acutely and seeks solace both in the security of her local library and the escape her phone screen provides by blocking out the world around her. As Daphne tries to make sense of what has happened she recalls memories of shared times and stories past, and in facing the darkness she finds a way back from the tangle of fear and confusion, to feel connected once more with her friends and family.

The Girl Who Became a Tree sees Joseph Coelho deploy a wide variety of poetic forms with consummate skill in its narration of events. He seamlessly but searingly weaves together the ancient legend of Daphne, who was turned into a tree to avoid the attentions of the god Apollo, and a totally modern tale, mixing real-life and fantasy, in which a latter-day Daphne seeks her own freedom. This is a heart-stoppingly imaginative story told in poems, at times bleak and even tragic, which is layered, rich and ultimately a tour de force of poetic skill and energy.

The Girl Who became a Tree has been shortlisted for this year’s Carnegie Medal.

Happy Reading!

Mrs Bruton
