NEWSLETTER 28

Dear all,

I hope you have all had a good week.

We have had an extremely productive day moderating all the work produced by our Year 11 and Post 16 students and using external staff too as a method of quality assurance. Thank you for your understanding in us having an additional inset day, the staff really appreciate it!

Next week is our last week before half-term, I can’t quite believe where the time has gone. We are looking very closely at all the new Government Guidance to see what measure we may look at relaxing after half-term. We will, however, communicate with you about this in a separate Parent Update.  Many of you would have seen on our school Facebook account many of our students being presented with a range of awards for the amount of positive points this week, we really love our extravagant rewards system!

Thank you to all of you who managed to return your child’s activities' form on time, if you haven’t done it yet, please return it ASAP.

English Department Shortlisted for Award

Last Friday, it was announced in the Times Educational Supplement (TES) that the English department have been shortlisted for 'English Team of the Year'. The award will recognise the achievements and efforts of an English team or English teacher over the last academic year.

TES editor Jon Severs said: “It is more important this year than ever before to celebrate the fantastic work schools do, because in the past 12 months they have gone above and beyond to ensure pupils were able to be educated and be kept safe in extraordinary circumstances. We were inundated with entries that demonstrated just how hard the pandemic made the work of schools, and just how amazing the response from staff has been. We are looking forward to showcasing , as we do every year, just how vital our education professionals are to every facet of this country. "

We are now one of eight schools on the shortlist, with the winner announced in a ceremony on the 25th June. Watch this space!

PGL Superstars!

There was some fantastic team work and great enthusiasm on display throughout the three days but the following students stood out because of their bravery and resilience, their leadership of the team, their support for their peers or for keeping the team spirits up with their positivity or sense of humour.

Well done everyone!

Royal Academy of Arts Youth Summer Show

I entered students into this year’s RA show and Abbie Bowker in year 12 and Ella Robinson in year 8 have been selected to show their work at the RA summer youth show this year. I am beyond proud and this truly is a real achievement. They have 33,000 entries and its is not easy to get selected.

As a school we should be very proud to have JOG represented in the RA exhibition in London this summer!

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

https://carnegiegreenaway.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Clap-When-You-Land.jpgCamino and Yahaira see their lives collide when their families and cultures are unexpectedly brought together in this thought-provoking novel.  Grief and family revelations are explored through dual narrative verse that questions how well we really know those closest to us.

This is a powerful, heart-breaking and compelling novel.  There is economy and beauty in the language, demonstrated in an immersive narrative artfully told through verse.  The structure and shape of the text adds an essential component to the superb overall quality of the story.  The believable characters develop and mature as the story unfolds in this tale of family and unconditional love.

Most students will know I am a big fan of free verse novels. An outstanding reading experience.
