Dear all,

It is days like today that makes me so proud to be a Headteacher.

Today, our Year 11 and Year 13 students left us and what brilliant year groups they have been. As we know, the last couple of years have been a real challenge for them with remote learning and coping with different exam expectations, but they have coped brilliantly. Today we shared smiles, memories, bouncy castles and ice cream vans! What a way to finish. Our Class of 2021 have been brilliant, we will certainly miss them, and we wish them every success for their future. We now have our fingers crossed that we are able to go ahead with their proms!

Finally, can I draw your attention to the Parent Update that I sent out today. It contains important information about our return in Term 6 and a few changes.

Have a great half-term everyone,

Paul Skipp

Headteacher

Year 10 end of Term 5 celebration assembly

This term we decided to 'flip' our usual celebration assembly - instead of celebrating our wonderful students, we decided to celebrate the staff, as well as key events & celebrity role models.

The students have nominated lots of different members of staff for a whole range of different reasons, such as being kind, delivering engaging lessons, support offered during lockdown and many more.

Below are some quotes from our students to describe some of our staff members :

She’s a legend!

She helped me with something really difficult and has made such a difference

His lessons are interesting but also fun

She cares about mental health

He is nice and understanding

She is great at helping me understand the work and helping me with GCSE revision & resources

Thank you for being lots of fun

10B wanted to celebrate the NHS & keyworkers

10E wanted to celebrate Marcus Rashford and his work to secure free school meals in the holidays

10G wanted to celebrate all the teens of the pandemic

Miss Diaper (tutor of 10B) wanted to celebrate the forthcoming Tokyo Olympic Games

Mrs Green celebrated an act of kindness in her town

Mr Walker said thank you to all the volunteers during the pandemic

Mrs Brooks (tutor of 10A) and the students in 10D wanted to say thank you to the year team for supporting all the tutors

Such a lovely way to end the term!  Happy holidays everyone!

Tree planting in commemoration of Year 11 2020-2021 cohort

27th May 2021

Thursday 27th May 2021 saw the 2016 cohort of John of Gaunt students plant a beautiful flowering cherry tree to commemorate their extraordinary journey over the last two years of studies due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. The Year 11 school council students, led by Mrs Addecott, were all in agreement that this year’s leaving celebrations should include a reference to this world event.  In addition, the Year 11 team pastoral team believed that any commemoration should be sustainable and environmentally friendly too.

Even during this difficult year, the Year 11 Council (pictured above) have worked hard and very effectively to improve aspects of school life and to make meaningful contributions to the Trowbridge community, and we are very proud of their dedication and commitment. Their work has clearly demonstrated their potential, and we wish them purposeful and fulfilling futures.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

• KS3 Adam - continuous resilience and efforts
• KS4 Abi - willingness to support peers and demonstrates good leadership skills
• KS5 Tyler - written work produced is of a high quality and all round good sportsman

Well done to those students who received recognition this term. Have a restful half term.

I don’t want my child to have free school meals, so what’s the point of applying for Pupil Premium funding?

Even if you do not wish your child to receive free school meals, if they are eligible for Pupil Premium (PP) funding we can (and do!) use the additional funding to boost our provision and are able to support families to ensure their child does not miss out on any valuable opportunities or experiences.  Here are some examples of how we use our funding to bridge the gaps…

Our curriculum has benefited over the years.  With the additional PP funding we have been able to employ Higher Level Teaching Assistants who have supported our Catch-up programme and Literacy/Numeracy additional classes at KS3.  This has led to the majority of our students who have joined JoG below the national expected levels in English and maths to progress rapidly to now be working in-line with their peers.

We have also used the additional funding to support students from all year groups to access on-line, small group core subject teaching after school with undergraduates through the National Tutoring Programme (NTP).

Accelerated reader is another programme that has been funded by our PP funding.  An integral aspect of how our library runs, PP funding helps us regularly purchase new and relevant books and run the software programme that has been boosting ALL our students reading in Yr7 & 8.

“What Accelerated Reader does so well is help students find their reading confidence - regardless of their starting level.  The book quizzes introduce a bit of fun but more importantly: it helps show even the less confident students what they are capable of reading.”

Mrs Bruton, Learning Resources manager

We have four academic mentors who support a range of students at KS4 & 5, including those who have pupil premium funding.

“The Academic Mentoring Program is a positive approach to support key students in KS4 to help prepare them fully and effectively for their exam and coursework requirements.  Students receive individualised subject-based tuition and revision guidance as well as regular check-ins and plenty of encouragement!  A supportive partnership between mentor, mentee and home is developed and regular communication is encouraged.  We aim to provide a learning environment where each key student can thrive and achieve their absolute best.

This programme also allows for funding to be used towards materials, books and general resources for school use.  In Art this year students have benefitted from using specialised art materials such as spray-paint, for example, which has enabled each student to fully express their creativity and exploration of skill development in this subject area and allowed for a greater depth of artistic study“

Miss Farion, Academic Mentor

“I feel that my organisation and focus has improved significantly by working with my mentor”   Yr 12 student

“I’m very glad I had the chance [to work with the mentors] as they both helped me massively.  They also changed my attitude towards school.”

“I am really glad I had the chance to work with the mentors.  I had the opportunity to go over things I wouldn’t have been able to in class in a 1 to 1 setting.”

“The unique approach they [the mentors] used to encourage you and help you succeed is really motivating.”

“The mentors were a massive help and future Yr10’s will be glad to have them both!”

Yr 11 students

All our PP students, when entering KS4, are provided with free revision guides in all their subjects – that’s a real saving for parents!

Over the last two years, the government has prioritised PP students to be loaned laptops to support them with their studies.  At The John of Gaunt, we have worked effectively to provide ALL our students who require laptops a device.

Throughout an academic year there are many additional trips, excursions and events for all year groups that enhance students’ learning experience that cannot be provided by the school and families need to pay for these.  For students who have PP status, financial subsidies can be made to ensure they have an equal opportunity of participating in all extra-curricular programmes offered including having music lessons paid for!

You can see the benefits.  If you feel you maybe eligible for Pupil Premium (PP) funding then please use this link to apply or find our more details.

Shepton Mallet Prison Trip

On Monday 24th May, we loaded ourselves into the minibus and set off on a trip to Shepton Mallet Prison. Upon arrival all students (& Miss Martin) were provided with a prisoner experience, handing over our belongings, being given a boiler suit to wear and being taken to our allocated cells by Prison Officer Maurice.

We proceeded to be put in pairs and locked into cells (see photo) with a series of puzzles to solve to find the anagram and get released, Mia smashed the challenge (with little in-put from Miss Martin) and left the cell within 18 minutes…unlike others who were still struggling with the riddles another 15 minutes later!

After our prisoner experience, Officer Maurice gave us a guided tour of the prison which dates back to 1625 and was decommissioned in 2013, with Q&A along the way, we learnt about the history of punishment, the several reforms the prison had been through, as well as the famous faces such as Reggie & Ronnie Kray who were imprisoned at Shepton during the 1950’s.

A fantastic day had by all & a pleasure to take such a wonderful group of Year 13 sociologists in their last week with us here at JOG!

Miss Martin

The Word is out - sponsorship opportunities to support The John of Gaunt School

Next term, we are organising an exciting summer festival and are seeking sponsorship from businesses in the region. A vibrant medley of events and activities are being organised to celebrate the spoken and written word across the school. ‘The Word 2021’ festival is already underway, but additional funds from local companies will offer a boost of income. Extra funding will be focused on celebrating our students and giving the school a festival feel.

What can you do?

If you work at a business that might support us, please could you bring this opportunity to your HR manager? Do you own a local company that wants to help make a difference? If so, please see the Sponsorship Opportunities In return, we can offer an accreditation package to thank supporters. Interested companies or individuals to please email their interest – specifying which option - to leagle@jogschool.org  by 25th June.

Every week you will find a new reading recommendation. It will be a mix of new and old books and all recommendations are available in your school library.

Would you like to recommend your favourite book? Pop in to see Mrs Bruton!

by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick

An exceptional retelling of the Irish legend of Tain Bo Cuailnge, this beautiful coming-of-age novel is set in Co Donegal in the long hot summer of 1976. When a dolphin swims into the bay at Carrig Cove, Emer and her best friend, Fee, feel an instant connection. As the dolphin starts to attract tourists, it doesn’t take long for the residents of neighbouring Ross Bay to become disgruntled and a dangerous gang war begins.

This compelling novel beautifully evokes a time and place. The reader needs no knowledge of the original legend to enjoy this gripping tale of love, loss and petty rivalry between two small fishing villages. Tension and suspense are foremost as old friendships are challenged and new love blossoms. The characters are convincing and the inequalities of 1970s Ireland are well portrayed. Each character has a part to play in the unfolding drama and when the inevitable tragedy strikes, lives are changed forever.

On Midnight Beach has been shortlisted for this year’s Carnegie Medal.

Happy Reading!

Mrs Bruton
