Dear all,

This week it has been wonderful to welcome our local Year 5 students to our school for their ‘step up’ days. We have received such positive comments from their parents and teachers, and we were really pleased that they were able to enjoy themselves. It was also really enjoyable to be part of our Year 6 webinar on Tuesday evening where we were able to share information with our new prospective parents.

As you will know from the news, COVID cases are continuing to rise across the country, particularly amongst young people. Whilst some restrictions within school have been lifted we will still be maintaining others in order to keep everyone as safe as possible.

Next week is our last week of lessons before students take part in activities week. We are really excited to be welcoming Poet, Ash Dickinson and Author, Chris Vick at the beginning. They will be meeting students as part of our literacy festival called ‘The Word’. Students will be taking part in a range of literacy based activities across the week.

Finally, I hope you have a great weekend. Let’s hope it really does ‘come home’. My prediction…. England 2 Italy 0 (let’s hope)!

Kind regards,

Paul Skipp

Headteacher

Last Day of Term

Our last day of term is Friday 23rd July, and we will be finishing early at 12:25pm.

Just a quick congratulations from myself and Miss Wood to the following pupils in Year 9: Isabelle N, Poppy J, Ciara P-T, Chanel K, Joshua D and Grace P.

I’m really looking forward to working with our great new group of young student leaders. I received some really great application letters in which the students all expressed their eagerness to use their voices in a way to make positive changes to the year group.

We are going to be working together to make sure that come September, the year group has a really optimistic start to their GCSE years here at John of Gaunt. We have already started working as a group on a rewards' system for the pupils in Year 9, and the Student Leadership group have already come up with some great ideas.

Congratulations to those pupils selected, and I look forward to working with you all.”

Feather Boy by Nicky Singer

Robert Nobel, the school pariah, triumphs over his own fears and the school bully, in this extraordinary tale of self-empowerment, legend and death.

Robert is a boy who can do anything – or so old Edith Sorrel at the nursing home tells him. Robert doesn’t think so, knowing as he does that he is the school geek. But something compels him to do what Edith asks – to visit old Chance House, where a boy once fell to his death from the top floor flat, to confront his fears and find some answers. Niker the bully thinks this is a great laugh. He challenges Robert to spend the night at Chance House with him – but there the balance of power changes, and it is Robert who proves to be the stronger. Niker feels threatened by the change – and when he finds out Robert’s secret obsession, to make the dying Edith Sorrel a coat of feathers like in the old legend of the Firebird, he knows just how to wrest his old power back. But just how important is the coat of feathers? Could it really save Edith’s life?

Mrs Bruton says: This is a book that is not full of action and big, dramatic events. It is however quietly powerful and almost feels like it could be a true story. A great read!

Happy Reading!

Mrs Bruton
