NEWSLETTER 6 - 15th October 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week I had the opportunity to visit the Year 8 students on their PGL trip in Liddington, and it was such a pleasure to see how engaged they were. I have often shared about my belief in the power of trips and activities in supporting the development of young people and this certainly showed the impact such events have. Also, this week, we held our first parents' evenings for Year 7 and Post 16 and hosted our own careers fair. The technology to enable on-line parents evenings has certainly improved, and we are really pleased with the positive feedback. The careers fair was also a real success, with Years 9-13 visiting the exhibition. I am very grateful to our Careers Advisor, Ms Lynch for organising this and enabling such a spread of employers and further education institutions.

This week we have sent further information to parents and carers regarding our COVID protective measures, if you have not read these letters I would ask that you refer to the website to see them Letters

Next week we break up for half-term on Wednesday 20th October. This therefore will be the final newsletter until we resume after half-term. Please remember, students start back to school on Tuesday 2nd November, due to our inset day on the Monday.

I hope you are all able to have a relaxing weekend and subsequent half-term.

With thanks,

Paul Skipp

Headteacher

Young Minds  - Wear it Yellow Day

Many thanks for your voluntary contributions to the Young Minds Charity.  We raised £263.64 for this fantastic charity.

Thank you to all who contributed.

Thanks to Bouygues UK

During lock down Bouygues UK kindly donated a large number of laptops to aid students' online learning from home. This made a huge difference for so many of our young people.

They have once again donated another ten laptops, this time to support students in our Homework Club.

John of Gaunt would like to thank Bouygues UK for their generosity in supporting our students.

Car parking at the start and end of the school day

As the evenings grow darker and the colder weather approaches we are aware that there is likely to be an increase in the number of students being driven to and / or from school. We would still like to encourage students to walk, use public transport or cycle but understand that this may not always be possible.

We have limited parking space so can we remind you to arrange to pick your child in a designated car park.

If you are using the school car parking facilities these may be very busy and extra care is needed to make sure that everyone is safe. Please can we ask that you keep to the recommended speed limit of no more than 10 miles an hour and are mindful of students who may be rushing to leave the site.

Many thanks

Safeguarding at The John of Gaunt School

At The John of Gaunt School we take safeguarding students very seriously. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Helen Kerr who can be contacted via email on hkerr@jogschool.org and via the school switch board. The Deputy Safeguarding Lead is Sarah Hill and her email is sjhill@jogschool.org and again she can also be contacted via the school switch board. All members of the school’s pastoral team are also part of the safeguarding team from Y7 to Y13. We have a Governor who is linked to safeguarding and this is Siobhan Perry, her email is sperry@jogschool.org

We work with other agencies, including health, social care and counselling services to support students.

A reminder that all relevant policies relating to safeguarding, including the latest version of Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE21) can be found in the polices section of the school website.  All polices are reviewed regularly to ensure they are in line with current legislation and student needs.

Throughout the year we work with our students to keep them informed about how to stay safe and what to do if they are worried about themselves of someone else. Safeguarding topics are covered in PSHE, aspects of curriculum subjects and through scheduled school assemblies. If a student is worried they can talk to any adult in school or if they wish they can report what they are worried about (even if it is not safeguarding) by dropping a note in a JoG cares box in reception and the library or by using the JoG cares email button in the student section of the school website. Using the JoG cares button allows students to choose to remain anonymous if they wish.

If you would like to discuss any safeguarding concerns please do not hesitate to contact your child’s pastoral lead or Mrs Kerr or Mrs Hill.
