NEWSLETTER 30 - 10 JUNE 2022

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you were all able to enjoy your half-term break. Our older students have certainly come back positive and engaged really well in their exams. This week I spoke with Year 10 and reminded them about this important time of year, particularly as their mock exams are only three weeks' away.

Thank you to all those that have completed our parent and carer questionnaire. Your feedback is always important so if you could take a few minutes to complete it that would be great Parent and Carer Questionnaire

As always at this time of year, we are providing a lot of tours for our current Year 5 students. If you have a Year 5 child (or know someone who has) please get in touch with Mrs Nichols snichols@jogschool.org to arrange a tour, remember OPEN DAY EVERY DAY. We believe the best way to view a school is to see it in action, and we are confident you will like what you see!

Have a great weekend everyone,

Best wishes,

Paul Skipp

Headteacher

Year 7 – Rainbow Salad

Just what we all need on a hot day – rainbow salad.

These have been based upon the principles of the Eatwell Guide and developing basic knife skills.

Horrible History JOG Style

Over 120 Year 8 pupils recently participated in the annual John of Gaunt School “Living History Day”.

The students learned the story of the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in October 1066. They role-played the key events in the story of Harold Godwinson, England’s last Saxon king and Duke William of Normandy which ended with the defeat of the Saxons and William becoming the new King of England.

They handled artefacts including swords, helmets, Halberks and battle-axes and then started on some battle training.

As new recruits to the Saxon army the students learned how to create the famous Saxon shield wall and how to handle their spear. As the Normans charged the shield wall the students held firm and repelled the enemy attack.

The event was organised in conjunction with Oxenwood Outdoor Education centre who provided the professional re-enactor and all the weaponry.

The day provided an enrichment opportunity for Year 8 students who had been studying the events of 1066 and the Civil War 1642-49 and how these shaped our island’s history. An event like this really brings History alive as the students don’t just learn about events but experience them.

It’s the next best thing to having a time machine!

Looking forward to next year,

Ms Davison

Head of History

New Year 6’s

We are currently preparing to welcome the new cohort of students to The John of Gaunt School, visiting primary schools and getting to know our future students.

We have really enjoyed receiving photos of the sunflowers our current year 7s and our soon-to-be Year 7’s have been growing from seeds sent by the Year and student council. Watching them grow is a fabulous way of joining the John of Gaunt community and seeing ‘time’ get shorter as the plants get taller, soon to be with us in September.

 We can’t wait!

The Year 7 team

The Phoenix

I spread my wings and sail across the sky.

There’s a fire blazing in me, and it’s lighting the night.

As I go higher all my past is burnt away,

I’m very powerful

my enemies stay at bay,

I am a symbol that can’t help but show the path.

There’s no one else like me…

I’m one of a kind.

I am bright yellow, orange and red.

Yellow and fearless

Orange and imperishable

Red and perpetual.

I soar through the celestial sphere,

Behind me there’s a combustion following me in the sky.

I am the next big thing…

Phoenix.

On Thursday, The John of Gaunt School hosted the U15s Girls Rounders Tournament. The schools that entered included Clarendon Academy, Kingdown School, Matravers School, St Augustine’s Catholic College and Frome College. The John of Gaunt won their first two games against Frome and Matravers. Players of the match went to Lily and Hala.

The next two games they lost against Kingdown and Clarendon. Player of the match for both games went to Emily.

The final game was very close against St Augstine’s who won by ½ a rounder! The player of the match went to Megan. The John of Gaunt School came 4th overall.

Team: Chloe Knight, Amy Marcinkiewicz, Lily Andrews, Emily Macklin-Day, Hala Hamdia, Megan Keast, Bella Kingwell, Riannon Passey-Brown and Grace.

Well done to all that took part!

Year 7 & 8 Boys Cricket Match

The year 7 and 8 boys cricket team took to the field for their first cricket fixture of the season against Kingdown school. The match was played in terrific spirits and was enjoyable to be a part of. Kingdown batted first and thanks to a spell of 4’s and 6’s in the middle of their innings, totalled a score of 106. JOG bowled and fielded very well and managed to take 2 wickets, which in the rules of this game, reduced the Kingdown total to 96. That was the target for JOG, 96 to draw, 97 to win. The boys really tried their best, looking for runs, looking to run hard and take any singles that were on offer. A few quick boundaries from Rory March got the boys ticking. However, the bowling from Kingdown didn’t allow for much momentum to be gathered by JOG resulting in a total of 66 runs, 30 short of Kingdown.

Congrats to Kingdown. The John of Gaunt boys represented the school exceptionally well, and should be proud of their efforts. With more fixtures coming up, please continue to come to Cricket club on Thursdays after-school with Mr Smith.
