Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the Christmas holidays I would like to thank all of our staff, students and their families for a fantastic term.

It has been a long term and this last week has brought fresh challenges. I had hoped that partial school closures were a thing of the past. I know Year 8 missed out on their Christmas Bap, but we will make sure that they have something special in the New Year.

A real highlight this week was the virtual Christmas Concert. It was such a pleasure to see. We were all disappointed that it couldn’t be in person in the Church, but the hard work of staff meant they were able to record and edit the video so that it was uploaded the same evening. I trust you enjoyed it too.

I hope that you are all able to enjoy the break with friends and family and I look forward to welcoming all students back to school on Wednesday 4th January.

Very best wishes,

Mr M Woodville
Headteacher

Immunisations

HPV Catch Up - Year 9, 10 and 11

The School Immunisation Team will be in school on Wednesday 4th January to do catch-up HPV vaccinations for those pupils in Years 9, 10 and 11 who missed their second vaccination and parents have given consent.  They are not able to do any additional vaccinations - separate email will be sent to parents of those pupils in the next couple of days who will be called for vaccination.

Nasal Flu Immunisations - Year 7, 8 and 9

The School Immunisation Team will be in school on Monday 16th January for Nasal Flu Immunisations.  A link will be sent out in due course for parents to consent to this.  If you do not complete the online link the Immunisation Team will not be able to do the immunisation as permission is not possible on the day.  The link will be sent out in due course, so please complete this as soon as you receive this.

Painkillers for students

If you wish for your child/children to have access to pain relief during the school day, please fill in a consent form and return to reception along with relevant medication (paracetamol/Ibuprofen/Calpol). This can then be stored in our Medical room, and your child will be able to access when needed.

Consent forms are available from reception for you to collect, or your child can collect form the medical room.

Please do not send your child in with any painkillers/medications in their bag/on their person without a consent form being completed.  Pupils should not carry medication on them but should leave this in the Medical Room so that we are able to monitor

Key Stage 4 Options

This week the Yr9 students have had an introductory assembly regarding the options process they will be participating in this year.  Although the process does not start until after Christmas, students and parents will be reflecting on their future studies following their subject evening last Wednesday.

Below you will note a timeline of events and deadlines.  Two key dates are:

  • 12th January when students will participate in a carousel of sessions delivered by staff who teach subjects unfamiliar to students as they are KS4 examined subjects only.  This event precedes the options evening where students, with their parents/carers, can find out more about the content and demands of subjects they are potentially interested in.
  • 2nd February - the deadline for options. I would like to stress there is no first come, first served policy up until the deadline date.  This should put all students' minds at rest and ensure they understand they have the time and can take time to reflect on their options, speak to various people, including our careers team and then make considered choices.

For now, all students need to do is work hard in all their subjects to make the best progress they can.  This will support their decision-making in the new year.

Ten Tors Latest

On Sunday 4th December, 32 hardy students set off from Longbridge Deverill on their latest training hike for the May 2023 Ten Tors Event. It was a drizzly and chilly day, but the glorious autumn colours were on full show as the students meandered along footpaths, roads and tracks.

The two older groups (45-mile and 55-milers) made a concerted effort to break me as I shadowed them, rattling off 22 miles in just over 6 hours. A hugely impressive average pace of 5.3kmh - well over what I had expected and they really made a clear statement that they would be capable of completing the May event in the time allowed. We took in a route via Hill Deverill, Tytherington and then looped over Summerslade Down and back down into Brixton Deverill. Superb work from all!

The younger 35-mile group were focusing on navigation and brilliantly covered about 16-miles, and demonstrated some virtually flawless navigation. We finished as the sun started to set, and threw our aching bodies (me in particular) back onto the minibuses for the journey home. Another wonderful walk with a great bunch of students. A special and deserved mention for Joseph Clark in Year 10 for his continued and selfless support of other students.

As always, huge thanks to volunteers Xavier Lord and Iain Richards and also Mrs Brooks for all their time and effort.

Huge congratulations to the Year 10 netball squad. All the following students have had a great season, and we have seen real improvements in their individual and team performances. The PE team are very proud of every single member, and it has been a delight in running the training and fixtures. We have been able to field two full teams with extras, we hope this continues into Year 11.

Lani D, Christina C, Grace S, Lilly H, Zavannah L, Ella R, Rhianna M, Phoebe A, Sophie W, Ruby A, Erin O'S, Konnie L, Chloe I, Evie L, Amelia K, Amelia B, Oliwia R, Yasmin C, Aiyana S, Ella G, Lilly M

I had the pleasure of taking the girls on their last fixture of the season, all players worked hard throughout even in the cold conditions.

Virtual Christmas Concert

Usually at this time of year the Music department would be welcoming you at Holy Trinity Church for our annual Carol Concert. Sadly, due to confirmed cases of the Group A Streptococcus (GAS) Infection within school we were not able to host this special evening this year. We didn’t want to not do anything, so we decided to record the concert for you to enjoy at home. Staff and students from years 7 through to year 13 came down to Holy Trinity Church to film their songs and instrumental pieces.

The virtual Christmas Concert premiered at 8.30pm on Tuesday 13th December following a day of filming. If you have not seen this, yet you can click on the link below to access it!

https://youtu.be/hqzv_i_oELQ

We would like to say thank you to all the students and staff for getting involved and making this possible. We very much hope that we can return to Holy Trinity Church next year and continue with our annual tradition and hope to see you then.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and all the best wishes for a Happy New Year.

Mrs Maguire and Miss Beer

Year 8 rewards

On Wednesday 14th December, we had the pleasure of spending tutor time with some very special students!  We asked our tutors to each nominate 2 students who they felt had been wonderful all term - just doing what we always ask of them!  Our tutors said it was hard to pick only 2 students each - so we'll have to do this again!

The students joined us in the canteen for a mug of hot chocolate with marshmallows & a delicious biscuit.  Along with some Christmas tunes, this was a really lovely way for us to spend tutor time together & for the students to feel recognised.

In addition to this, Mr Walker led a virtual celebration assembly for our whole year group on the last day of term.  This was an opportunity for us to celebrate achievement & attendance, as well as sharing some 'shout-outs' from the teachers.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Solar Astronomy at JOG

We’ve been fortunate enough to recently acquire a telescope for the school and, as of last week, also a solar filter that allows us to observe the Sun directly in the day; this has been incredibly enlightening for the GCSE Astronomy and A-level Physics students studying the behaviour of the Sun. Here is a spectacular image which was captured with the telescope.

The Sun appears orange rather than white due to our atmosphere preferentially scattering blue light and thereby removing the blue colour from the Sun, it’s also why our sky looks blue, and the effect is called Rayleigh scattering.

So, what are the black ‘spots’ covering the Sun? These are sunspots, approximately 10,000km across, nearly as wide as the Earth and show areas of intense magnetic activity. These are just below the surface of the Sun known as the photosphere. This activity leads to an absence of photons (energy) reaching parts of the photosphere thereby becoming cooler and dimmer in colour. The sunspots below are from the central northern part of the above image:

Sunspots are found in pairs because each ‘end’ of the sunspot acts like half of a bar magnet and is connected by incredibly strong magnetic fields. They can ‘survive’ for anything from a few hours to months.

Some other features in the image are trickier to see for e.g., on the North-Western limb (edge) of the solar disk of the same image you can observe a lighter orange patina amongst the darker orange. These are known as faculae; they are more challenging to observe due to the subtle difference in contrast between them and the rest of the solar disk. The faculae are regions of more intense magnetic activity leading to extremely high temperatures ~8000K.

Our students will continue to monitor sunspot activity over the next few months to see how they change as their movement on the photosphere will inform us about the rotational period of the Sun. This can be quite tricky as the Sun isn’t a solid in fact the poles rotate more quickly than at the equator!

NB: Never observe the Sun without specifically designed eyewear and never point binoculars or telescopes at them. Irreversible damage will occur to your eyes or equipment.
