Dear parents and carers,

The new year has seen the launch of our Character Curriculum, which encompasses a holistic approach to student development and culture. The three school values, Kindness, Positivity and Belonging, will frame: a tutor programme from pm registration for Key Stage three, tutor time for the whole school as well as enrichment, extracurricular, student leadership and mental health wellness supported by our mental health lead Kate Poole. This programme will structure positive thinking, resilience, real world experience as well as opportunities for the development of our students as well-rounded individuals who are ready for the world beyond John of Gaunt. 

Last term was an exciting and collaborative one with our student councils being formed and our year leaders being selected. We have already covered what makes an excellent student council, how rewards can be made more meaningful, and building bridges with the community. 

I am pleased to announce some new developments in terms of rewards. We are introducing The Excellence Awards. These are peer-nominated awards that put Kindness, Positivity and Belonging celebrations in the hands of students. At reception, there will be nomination slips and a box to submit them. These will be collated, and the Student Development Team and myself will select winners on a termly basis. 

In addition to this, I will be selecting three students from each year group who have the highest points in each of our values; Kindness, Positivity and Belonging from their Class Charts awards. These students will receive a certificate for their excellence as well as additional points awarded on class charts. A reminder that students can cash in their rewards with the Faculty Admin Team at the end of each term, or save them up for some larger rewards. These range from pens and pencils all the way up to top tech, such as Apple AirPods. These rewards are currently under review as per the student council requests, and we look forward to communicating this with you in the new year.

Attendance is key to being successful both from a wellbeing and an academic point of view, and experiencing a wide and broad cultural experience leads to this as we are always aiming for excellent attendance. Attendance is, indeed, everyone’s business and, as such, we have a variety of support strategies to ensure parents, carers and guardians have the help they need to support excellent attendance. The law entitles every child of compulsory school age to an efficient, full-time education suitable to their age, aptitude, and any special educational needs they may have. It is the legal responsibility of every parent to make sure their child receives that education either by attendance at a school or by education otherwise than at a school. Where parents decide to have their child registered at school, they have an additional legal duty to ensure their child attends that school regularly. This means your child must attend every day that the school is open, except in a few allowable circumstances such as being too ill to attend or being given permission for an absence in advance from the school. If this is something that you need support with, please consider the following support tools and don’t hesitate to contact your child’s tutor, head of year or our school attendance team. In addition, please see the support networks and guides that aim to remove the barriers to excellent attendance.

Wading amongst pre-historic rocks
Ten Tors Training has already resumed for the year, in the shape of a 15 to 17-mile circuit of the Avebury area. The additional challenges on this walk were the extensive flooding and colder temperatures.

Affordable Schools Parental Survey

Dear Parents and Carers,

At The John of Gaunt School we want to make sure that all children are able to make the most of the school day and that no child misses out on anything. Your answers to this survey will help us understand whether school costs are causing any concerns for our families and children and see whether there is anything that we can do to help out.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Year 8 HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination - Tuesday 16th January 2024

Your Year 8 child is now due their HPV vaccine, which will be delivered by the School Aged Immunisation Team on Tuesday 16th January 2024.

The HPV vaccine is offered to all boys and girls in Year 8 (aged 12/13 years) because the evidence is clear that the HPV vaccine helps protect both boys and girls from HPV-related cancers. More than 280 million doses of the HPV vaccine have been given worldwide, including 120 million doses in the US and over 10 million in the UK.

The HPV vaccine used in the NHS vaccination schedule is Gardasil 9 and protects against 9 of the types of HPV which can cause cancer and genital warts for most people with just one dose.

Nurturing Healthy Screen Habits: A Guide for Parents

Dear Parents,

I hope this newsletter finds you well. As we navigate the digital age, it's crucial to address the impact of screen time on our teenagers' well-being. In this edition, we'll explore the effects of screen time and provide guidance on fostering healthy habits in our teens.

How do children use screens?

Benefits of screen time:

Screen use provides a range of opportunities for creativity and learning –

  • 70% of parents strongly agree that using devices is essential for their child’s development.
  • It gives children access to a wealth of information to build their knowledge and technology takes away physical barriers to social connections to make children less isolated.
  •  The internet can also be inspirational for children with a certain passion, in particular when discovering content and sharing their own content.

Understanding the Effects:

Physical Health: Prolonged screen time can contribute to sedentary behaviour, affecting posture and physical health. Encourage your teen to take breaks, stretch, and engage in physical activities regularly.

Sleep Disruption: Excessive screen use, especially before bedtime, can interfere with sleep patterns. Establish a technology-free zone at least an hour before bedtime to ensure a better quality of sleep.

Social and Emotional Impact: Social media and online interactions can influence teenagers' self-esteem and mental health. Foster open communication with your teen about their online experiences, and guide them in developing a healthy perspective.

Setting Healthy Boundaries:

Screen-Free Zones: Designate specific areas in your home as screen-free zones, such as dining tables and bedrooms. This helps create a balance between online and offline activities.

Establish Screen Time Limits: Collaboratively set reasonable daily limits for screen time. Discuss the importance of quality over quantity and encourage them to explore various offline activities.

Educate on Digital Citizenship: Instil the values of responsible digital citizenship. Teach your teen about online etiquette, privacy, and the potential consequences of inappropriate online behaviour.

Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle:

Encourage hobbies: Help your teen discover and pursue offline hobbies and interests. Whether it's sports, arts, or reading, engaging in non-screen activities contributes positively to overall well-being.

Model Healthy Behaviour: Be a positive role model by demonstrating balanced screen habits. Your actions speak louder than words, and your teen is likely to adopt healthy behaviours by observing yours.

Emphasise Real-World Connections: Encourage face-to-face interactions with friends and family. Balancing online and offline connections is essential for the development of meaningful relationships.

Monitoring and Communication:

Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins to discuss your teen's online experiences. Create an open and non-judgmental space for them to share their thoughts, concerns, and any challenges they may be facing.

Use Parental Controls: Utilise parental control features to monitor and manage your teen's screen time. This can help set appropriate boundaries while respecting their need for independence.

Remember, the goal is not to eliminate screen time entirely, but to help teenagers develop a healthy relationship with technology. By fostering open communication and setting reasonable boundaries, we can guide our teens toward a balanced and positive approach to screen use.
