At The John of Gaunt School we are very proud of our reputation in ensuring that students made the big jump from primary to secondary with ease. We aim to make the move as smooth as possible and also understand the worries and concerns that parents and students may have about the “unknown”.
We take children from all over West Wiltshire. Villages including Holt, Staverton, Hilperton, Dilton Marsh, West Ashton, Wingfield, North Bradley, Lavington, Westwood and many others are home to our students. While towns like Bradford on Avon, Devizes, Warminster, Westbury, Melksham and of course Trowbridge are the main places where our students live.
Within and around Trowbridge we have students from every Primary School. So whether you live in Trowbridge or in the surrounding area you will have friends who live nearby, and you will make new friends who are just like you from far and wide.
Really, wherever you live you are lucky because all 8 of the secondary schools in West Wiltshire work together to make sure you get a excellent education. When you are older you might even do a course at one of the other schools!
Our Transition Process
We believe that a successful transition from primary will provide the foundation for both academic and social success at The John of Gaunt School. Our transition program starts with all year 5 students spending a day with us enjoying an experience of secondary school lessons and activities . We work closely with our primary schools to ensure that through year 6 students are supported, and we have both enhanced transition for students with a range of additional needs, including learning needs and those students who may be anxious. We have a full transition day for all year 6 students in the summer term.
In June, we have 3 mornings where identified students come into school and meet our staff to help allay any worries about their move.
In May/June Miss Lewis (Head of Year 7) visits every student in their primary schools to talk through the process and to meet the students and their teachers. We have an excellent relationship with our Primaries, and we work together to ensure that every child’s move to secondary school enables them to carry on with their learning from Key Stage 2.
For any queries related to the move from primary to secondary school then please contact Mrs Kerr at email@example.com
We have one member of our Pastoral team who is dedicated to looking after our new Year 7s, not only in the early days of their move to secondary school, but also throughout the rest of the year to ensure that every student is settled and feels part of our community. This care continues throughout their education and is an important factor in allowing every student to achieve their best.
We have received very positive feedback from both our parents and our students about the transition from Year 6 into Year 7.
So much to look forward to!
